Placenta Encapsulation

Reliably crafted with attention to detail, safety, and care

Support made by you, for you.

Your placenta is an incredible organ that grows during your pregnancy. It acts as your baby’s liver, lungs, and circulatory system, initiates labor through hormones, and stimulates lactation to begin after its delivery. How cool is that! Because your placenta is an endocrine organ (meaning it produces important hormones) it leaves behind a “hormone trail” that can last for 3-4 weeks after giving birth. These hormones are responsible for establishing milk supply, maintaining healthy energy levels, and much more.

Consuming your placenta is one way of allowing these hormones to taper off more slowly, which has many reported benefits* including:

  • Increase in milk production

  • Quicker recovery from birth with less bleeding

  • Increase in energy levels

  • Less incidence of a postpartum mood or anxiety disorder

  • Replenishes iron levels and minerals

  • Allows for hormones to transition from the body more slowly and gently

What To Expect

Before birth

2 weeks before your estimated due date, I will give instructions for what to do with your placenta and walk you through the process.

After birth

24-48 hours after I receive the call that your baby has arrived, I will come pick up your placenta and either transport it safely and securely to complete the encapsulation process, or I will do it there in your home. This way, you can be as part of the process as you would like, and have full transparency about the process.

Method

I encapsulate using the TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) method. This entails cleaning the placenta and steaming it through with organic lemon, ginger, and jalapeno. These herbs, combined with the steaming, have a “warming” effect, which is said to be of most benefit to the newly postpartum person. Bringing in warmth during the initial postpartum time allows for the most chi, or energy, to come back to you after giving birth. After being steamed, the placenta is cut into thin strips, dehydrated, and then ground into a fine powder and sifted. After it is in this final stage, it is put into capsules (gelatin or vegan) and is ready for consumption.

Timeline

The entire process from start to finish takes about 2 days. During this time, I am happy to involve families as much as they would like by giving “tours” of the placenta and sharing details about each step. Many women will choose to begin consuming their placenta 2-3 weeks after giving birth to receive the full benefit.

Safety

To ensure maximum safety, I will only work on one placenta at a time. This also makes for fast turn around time, so that your placenta comes back to you by 5 days after I pick up. I am encapsulation trained, OSHA bloodborne pathogen trained, and also have my current Food Handler’s permit for Washington state. Much of my equipment is single-use to assure everything is sanitary from the start. All reusable equipment is thoroughly sanitized to exceed OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen Training standards (often with added precautions from me, just because I like to check things twice!) You can assure that if I am encapsulating your placenta, every step of the process will be overseen with the most careful attention to detail, quality, and utmost safety.

Want to honor your placenta in a different way?

I also offer placenta burial facilitation, which is another way to pay respects and honor your amazing creation. This service looks like meeting for a 2 hour consultation, where we discuss your hopes and ideas for placenta burial, any cultural customs or traditions you have, and talk about the different ways to bury a placenta. I can also walk the land you plan on doing the burial with you, and talk about the best kind of tree or shrub to plant based on what season we are in and what your land looks like. This is always done in a family-led, supportive, and culturally humble way.
